The Covid Bug has meant the cancellation of so many events we were supposed to be involved in that we have lost count. This is a great sadness to us, not only because we are missing out on seeing so many friends, but because the most enjoyable thing about singing is being in a room with other people, singing and sharing songs. We hope that, before too long, a way will be found to sing together in safety.
There have been some bright spots. Shan has used the time to improve her whistle playing and is taking regular lessons through Zoom with David Faulkner of the Eelgrinders. My concertina playing has improved from a much lower base, but I am enjoying playing along with her and playing many of the notes that were intended.
Zoom has also proved important to the Traditional Song Forum, which has been meeting fortnightly to hear talks on various aspects of traditional song. We are reaching people from as far away as Japan to the east and Seattle to the west. TSF membership has more than doubled since the beginning of the year – find out more about what we are doing on www.tradsong.org.
I have also used the time to develop a way of turning my talks into videos to go on YouTube. These are based on the original script and PowerPoint slides. You can read more about these elsewhere on the website here. There are five videos available at present with more in the pipeline.
And my work on traditional song continues. I am also starting work on a new book – more details soon!
